How to Read a Supplement Label Before You Buy

The front of a supplement bottle is designed to catch your attention. The rest of the label deserves just as much time. Before comparing products, look beyond the product name and work through the information on the packaging.

Start with the serving size

Check how the product defines one serving before comparing ingredient amounts. A serving may contain more than one capsule or another measured quantity. Comparing the amount per capsule on one product with the amount per serving on another can give a misleading impression.

Read both ingredient lists

The Supplement Facts panel identifies dietary ingredients and amounts per serving. Also read the “Other Ingredients” section, where ingredients such as capsule materials, flavors or binders may appear. Do not assume products with similar names have identical formulations.

Check directions and cautions

Read the directions on the actual product you receive, along with any age limits, warnings and other stated conditions of use. If the online image is unclear or the packaging differs from the listing, ask for clarification before using the product.

A label is a useful source of product information, but it does not establish that a supplement is suitable for you. Supplements can interact with medicines. Discuss suitability with a healthcare professional, especially if you take medication, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are considering a product for a child.

Compare like with like

Make a short comparison note for each product: format, serving size, servings per container, ingredient amounts and price. Separate the bottle quantity from the number of servings. Read the full description rather than relying on a headline or a rating alone.

Keep your questions specific

Useful questions include: Can I see a readable photo of the current label? Which pack size is supplied? Where are the directions and warnings shown? A clear question is easier for a support team or manufacturer to answer.
